Rye Whiskey Sales Continue to Rise

by | Nov 12, 2013 | alcohol beverage law

If you have spent any time in a cocktail bar, you likely noticed various rye whiskeys on the backbar and menu. This was not the case several years ago. The rise in popularity of rye in bars has helped rye whiskey grow 41% to 275,000 cases in 2012, up from 195,000 cases in 2011, according to Impact Databank.

Rye whiskey sales are expected to continue, with 2013 outpacing 2012. According to a November 11, 2013 Shanken News Daily article, “Rye is benefiting from the familiarity and leveraging of popular Bourbon brand name extensions such as Jim Beam Rye, Knob Creek Rye, Wild Turkey Rye, Bulleit Rye and George Dickel Rye, as well as the rebirth of some historic brands.”

The Shanken story also notes much of the demand is driven from the on-premise where bartenders are using rye in classic cocktails such as the Sazerac and Manhattan. And whiskey-lovers are picking up bottles from their local liquor store as well, driving traffic in the off-premise.

“For now, major distillers are investing in expanded operations and increasing rye production and aging capabilities as well as enhancing packaging and looking at line extensions,” according to Shanken Daily News.
